Description

Freswick Harbour, Skirza, early 19th century and later. A masonry pier, of local flagstone laid horizontally, with a modern concrete breakwater to the east. Nearby is a single-storey range of stores (ND36NE 41), flagstone-roofed. J R Hume 1977. Survey visit 07/05/2017 As described. No longer actively used, but local resident and landowner reported (in 2017) that it had been in use up to 2-3 years previously. Fishing equipment including lobster pots and a winch still on site. Steps providing access to the store building (13511). Several mooring rings set into the top on the west (interior) side of the pier, and a stone bollard at the end. Two flights of steps on the west side lead down to the water. A modern concrete slipway leads from the road to the beach. In good condition. 1st edition OS map shows a natural haven here with a channel in the rock platform, named the Haven of Skirza, by the 2nd edition OS map, it has been enhanced with the construction of the pier.
