Description

Remains of a glider trap from World War II consisting of metal bars/scaffolding running in a strip across a flat area. NMRS, MS/712/6.
Remains of scaffolding poles, arranged in a strip, is visible on the sand surface and partially buried under vegetated dunes to the west of a red brick pillbox in Foveran Links. Numerous metal scaffolding fittings scattered across the flat sand area. These are the remains of Admiralty Pattern beach scaffolding erected mainly in 1941 to reinforce existing anti-tank cube defences (If Hitler comes pages 100-2) This is the master record for military sites in the immediate vicinity. A nearby pillbox (SCAPE ID: 15743), concrete structures with firing loopholes (SCAPE ID: 14931), and anti-tank cubes (SCAPE ID: 15744) are recorded as separate records. Research by Gordon Barclay suggests that the beach scaffolding is the best-preserved section on the Scottish mainland. The structures in the dunes may also be unique, with no parallels found on any other Scottish mainland beach. This group of structures may represent an observation and command post with limited capacity for self-defence. Reference: Gordon Barclay (2013) If Hitler Comes. Preparing for Invasion: Scotland 1940.
